We place an emphasis on data, both for our own planning and for the benefit of our customers. As part of the county's ongoing commitment to transparency, please access our statistical data and reports here. These code officials can answer your code questions and offer guidance as you try to plan your project from conception to submittal. After your project is submitted for plan review or in the field for inspections, this team can still assist, however, the interpretations of your Plans Examiner or Field Inspector will take precedent. Furthermore, code enforcement always has to come up with new solutions to address new concerns, and we have to coordinate with different departments in a jurisdiction. Examples include, but are not limited to, public works, licensing, fire departments, building, finance, mayoral executive offices, city attorney, engineering, police or planning. There is no unique standard where code enforcement belongs, because we work with all. But gun violence is putting pressure on their relationship with Republican lawmakers, who are often proponents of looser gun laws.

By the same token, the description, responsibilities and duties of the code enforcement officers vary dramatically by jurisdiction and municipality. Fortunately, I’m familiar with code enforcement because many non-emergency customer service 311 centers handle these calls. Even though a part of the job does result in violations, code enforcement officers’ main objective is to ensure an attractive, lawful and safe community. From New York to Texas to Alabama, law enforcement officials have warned for years that relaxing gun laws would lead to more violence toward police. The fatal shooting of a local police officer and three members of a fugitive task force in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Monday seems to bear those fears out. This is a great question, and one that can not be easily answered in a simple sentence.

I assumed there was a mistake and perhaps my name was on the football roster in error. I began to scroll slowly through the football player’s roster, but there was no “Erica”. After that day I never tried out for cheer again, until I got to college. My sophomore year I decided to try out for the Luv-A-Bulls cheer team, who had just won the National Championship the previous year. I worked very hard to learn the material and was determine to give it my all come audition day. Shortly after auditioning both teams, JV and Varsity were selected.

I was raised in a small town called Stanley, NC. I was 8 years old and b/c of my athletic capabilities at a young age, I assumed there was no sport I couldn’t do. My mom signed me up for cheer and I went to every practice eager to learn the material, as I was determined to make the team. I practiced so much around the house; my parents would yell, “sit down”. I went in the gym with 4 other girls and put on a show, so I thought. I left out the audition feeling really good and excited about becoming a cheerleader.

I was ecstatic to hear my name; “Erica” called for the varsity cheer team. After college I began working and pursuing a career for myself. Because of my love for children I decided to look into volunteer work involving the youth. In 2009 I was given the opportunity to be an assistant coach for C-Meck Cowboys. Thereafter, I became Head Coach and volunteered my services for 5yrs. There’s a quote that states, “When you do what you love, you will never work a day in your life”.

Public Policy

The speaker chooses the chairs of standing committees, appoints most of the members of the Rules Committee, appoints all members of conference committees, and determines which committees consider bills. States entitled to more than one representative are divided into single-member districts. This has been a federal statutory requirement since 1967 pursuant to the act titled An Act For the relief of Doctor Ricardo Vallejo Samala and to provide for congressional redistricting.[18] Before that law, general ticket representation was used by some states. Nevertheless, these direct elections were a significant milestone in the development of democracy. In the ensuing decades, states moved rapidly toward universal suffrage for white men.

Generally, anyone who meets the Constitutional requirements and wishes to run for a seat in the House of Representatives must accumulate a certain number of signatures on a petition and/or pay registration fees to the state. The U.S. Supreme Court has on several occasions confirmed that neither a state legislature nor the U.S. Congress itself may add or modify the qualifications to serve as a member of Congress, without a constitutional amendment doing so. In addition, the Constitution, in Article I, Section 5, clause 1, expressly empowers the House and Senate to be the final judge of the qualifications of its own members. However, in doing so, the House and Senate may consider only the qualifications set out in the Constitution. If 25 sounds young to you, consider that the founders first set the minimum age to serve in the House at 21, same as the voting age.

These retreats can help Member offices improve communication, enhance work processes, develop long-term strategic plans and more. Offices can also pay a private vendor to facilitate staff retreats. Each Member is personally responsible for the payment of any official and representational expenses incurred that exceed the authorized MRA which the Member shall pay from personal funds.

Once a candidate has completed getting on the ballot, they are officially recognized as candidates for the office they seek. To run for office in your state, you must confirm your eligibility before taking further action. These prerequisites differ from state to state but often include being a citizen of the United States, a state resident, and at least 25 years old. Getting on the ballot is crucial for any candidate running for office.

Committee Websites

The House also has one permanent committee that is not a standing committee, the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, and occasionally may establish temporary or advisory committees, such as the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming. This latter committee, created in the 110th Congress and reauthorized for the 111th, has no jurisdiction over legislation and must be chartered anew at the start of every Congress. The House also appoints members to serve on joint committees, which include members of the Senate and House. Some joint committees oversee independent government bodies; for instance, the Joint Committee on the Library oversees the Library of Congress. Other joint committees serve to make advisory reports; for example, there exists a Joint Committee on Taxation.

Qualifications to be a US Representative

Historically, many territories have sent non-voting delegates to the House. While their role has fluctuated over the years, today they have many of the same privileges as voting members, have a voice in committees, and can introduce bills on the floor, but cannot vote on the ultimate passage of bills. Presently, the District of Columbia and the five inhabited U.S. territories each elect a delegate. A seventh delegate, representing the Cherokee Nation, has been formally proposed but has not yet been seated.[30] An eighth delegate, representing the Choctaw Nation is guaranteed by treaty but has not yet been proposed.

Official travel must originate and terminate in either Washington, D.C., the Member’s District, or another location of official business except where otherwise stipulated in the Handbook. Members’ websites may be maintained by either House Information Resources (HIR), the Member’s Congressional office, or a private vendor authorized to provide Web services to the House in compliance with the regulations issued by the Committee. Paid for with official funds from the office of [Member’s name].

After the conference chair, there are differences between each party's subsequent leadership ranks. After the Democratic caucus chair is the campaign committee chair (Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee), then the co-chairs of the Steering Committee. For the Republicans it is the chair of the House Republican Policy Committee, followed by the campaign committee chairman (styled as the National Republican Congressional Committee). Seats vacated during a term are filled through special elections, unless the vacancy occurs closer to the next general election date than a pre-established deadline. The term of a member chosen in a special election usually begins the next day, or as soon as the results are certified. Under Article I, Section 2 of the Constitution, seats in the House of Representatives are apportioned among the states by population, as determined by the census conducted every ten years.

All such expenditures are subject to public disclosure in the same manner as for other expenditures of MRA funds. Each Member is personally responsible for the payments of any official and representational expenses incurred that exceed the provided MRA or that are incurred but are not reimbursable under these regulations. The CAO also assumed some of the responsibilities of the House Information Services, which previously had been controlled directly by the Committee on House Administration, then headed by Representative Charlie Rose of North Carolina, along with the House "Folding Room".

"This total ban on abortion that the Arizona Supreme Court has ruled on is out of line with where the people of this state are," Lake said in a video statement on social media earlier this month. The three primary House office buildings—Cannon, Longworth and Rayburn—share a room numbering system for above-ground rooms that might confuse visitors at first. The system is fairly straight forward and can be used to identify most member and committee offices merely by knowing the correct room number regardless of building. Members may refer to their membership in a CMO on their official stationery. Official funds may not be used to print or pay for stationery for the CMO.

Hamilton said she had several phone conversations with Republicans the night before the vote and while she would not divulge the details of those conversations, she said it made her cautiously optimistic. "I've known for a while that the votes were there, it just takes a lot of fortitude, a lot of spine," Democratic state Rep. Stephanie Stahl Hamilton, who sponsored the bill, told ABC News' Jaclyn Lee. Staff can form a Congressional Staff Organization (“CSO”) for the purpose of facilitating interaction among Congressional staff. CMOs may not hold independent events outside of the Washington, D.C.

The Legislative Process

Additionally, some territories may choose to also elect shadow representatives, though these are not official members of the House and are separate individuals from their official delegates. The late 19th and early 20th centuries also saw a dramatic increase in the power of the speaker of the House. The rise of the speaker's influence began in the 1890s, during the tenure of Republican Thomas Brackett Reed. While the minority leader was the head of the minority party, the majority leader remained subordinate to the speaker. The speakership reached its zenith during the term of Republican Joseph Gurney Cannon, from 1903 to 1911. The speaker's powers included chairmanship of the influential Rules Committee and the ability to appoint members of other House committees.

What's a Select Committee?

On all four occasions, the President was subsequently acquitted by the U.S. Senate, which has the sole power to try impeachments under Article I, Section 3. To ensure that House members were accountable to the people, Article I, Section 2 provided for relatively frequent elections, to take place every two years.

Members are not authorized to procure consultant services or to enter into detailee agreements. The Congressional Accountability Act (CAA) also contains definitions of “employees” and “interns.” Nothing in this Handbook alters those statutory definitions as applied under the CAA. 11.Members may not use official resources to misrepresent their current officialpositions or titles within the House. A Member may not accept from any private source in-kind support having monetary value for an official activity. The Communications Standards Commission (“Commission”) regulates all official communications. Questions about communications should be directed to the Communications Standards Commission.

Like the Senate, the House of Representatives was established by the U.S. Today, the nation is witnessing the 115th United States Congress. Constitution, British law banned persons born outside England or the British Empire from ever being allowed to serve in the House of Commons. In requiring members of the House to have been a U.S. citizen for at least seven years, the founders felt they were balancing the need to prevent foreign interference in U.S. affairs and keeping the House close to the people. In addition, the founders did not want to discourage immigrants from coming to the new nation. Unlike the oath of office sworn by the President of the United States, where it is used only by tradition, the phrase “so help me God” has been part of the official oath of office for all non-presidential offices since 1862.

Women too were denied equal citizenship for most of our history, only winning the right to vote when the Nineteenth Amendment was added to the Constitution in 1920. Before members are assigned to committees, each committee’s size and the proportion of Republicans to Democrats must be decided by the party leaders. The total number of committee slots allotted to each party is approximately the same as the ratio between majority party and minority party members in the full chamber.

Getting on the Ballot

The Constitution's silence as to authority to impose additional qualifications meant that this power resides in the states. There is no central listing of member office public e-mail addresses. Each member of Congress establishes their office's policy related to the processing and management of e-mail. Generally, if a member has a public e-mail address, it can be found on the member's website. The office may list a public e-mail address or provide a form directly on the member's website. The U.S. House of Representatives does not provide a listing of public e-mail addresses for the elected Representatives.

Port Transportation: Getting to the Manhattan Cruise Terminal Without a Car

ny cruise terminal

In New York, temperatures hit their peak in July and August, with humidity reaching up to 90 percent. There aren’t usually any snowstorms to worry about until December due to the city’s proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. Keep in mind that winters can be very cold especially upstate, and there may be heavy snow and ice until well into May. You can also take them to the Central Park Zoo, and visit all of the animals found within.

Smart shops and trendy restaurants have spread like wildfire, drawing Manhattanites across the river for fashionable dining and serious shopping. Five Brooklyn communities that are definitely worth a look are Brooklyn Heights, Cobble Hill, Park Slope -- down from Prospect Park -- Williamsburg and Brighton Beach. Be sure to request wheelchair service with your cruise line agent since you can’t do so with the terminal. Using services like Uber and Lyft may cost significantlyless than taking a taxi. But just like taxis, the cost is determined based onwhere you’ll be picked up. It’s a good idea to compare approximate Uber/Lyftrates with taxi rates to figure out which would be best for you. When you return, you’ll first be directed to the baggagehall to get your luggage, then to the parking garage, or any awaiting coaches, taxis, or limos. Port Cape Liberty is in close proximity to EWR-Newark Liberty Airport (10 mi / 16 km to the west, ~20-min travel time by car) and easy to access, skipping NYC's heavy traffic and bridges.

There are several designated handicap parking spaces reserved for those who need this option. Additionally, Porters are on-site by approximately 9am to assist passengers with luggage and other belongings during embarkation and disembarkation. It is important to remember to that it is customary to tip these individuals in accordance with their services. The current parking rates for standard-sized vehicles (which includes cars, vans, and trucks) is $25 per day. Oversized vehicles (RVs, busses, and limousines) will cost $40 per day.

More Tips About the Manhattan Cruise Terminal

Some of the lesser popular options when it comes to transportation is arriving by train, bus, or even a ferry boat, but New York has them all. In this case, they run only from area airports to the Manhattan Terminal… and only on the day of sailing. So if you come in early or are staying at a hotel in the area, then the cruise line transfer isn’t a viable option.

Taxis

The Red Hook terminal's boarding lounge is located directly after check-in with seating available for passengers. The Manhattan terminal (Piers 88 and 90) is one of the busiest in North America and has recently undergone $200 million dollars in state-of-the -art renovations. It is in the process of upgrading to be able to accommodate the world’s largest ships. There is a lot of planning that is involved when going on a cruise.

Read these must know things before your cruise vacation out of the Manhattan Cruise Terminal in New York City including tips and resources. Connecting to Con Edison power grid, the shorepower system allows ships to run their onboard systems without using diesel generators.

You may choose to arrange transportation to (and from) each of these terminals via your cruise ship line’s shuttles running from each airport. In general, if you are traveling with more than one other person, a taxi will be cheaper since the shuttles are priced per person and the taxi rides are flat rates. Dedicated embarkation and debarkation areas allow passengers to get on the ship without waiting. In its first year of operation, the 182,000-square-foot Brooklyn Cruise Terminal welcomed 40 ships and added 330 new permanent jobs to the Brooklyn waterfront. Alternatively, you can take public transportation from JFK or LGA to the cruise terminal.

Some buses are marked "Limited" which means they will only stop at major cross streets (i.e., 14th, 23rd, 34th, 42nd) rather than every two or three blocks. All buses require exact change in coins or a swipe of your MetroCard. The $2 fare paid by MetroCard allows for direct transfers within the subway system on all lines.

However, it’s essential to consider the weather conditions and hurricane season when planning your trip. On a cruise ship, always supervise children when they are swimming to ensure their safety. Remain observant and attentive to your surroundings while exploring port cities, and remember that safety is enhanced when traveling with others instead of going solo. The Brooklyn Cruise Terminal was the first shore power system for cruise ships installed on the East Coast of the United States and remains the only shore power capable terminal on the East Coast.

The project also included dredging (deepening) the navigation channel. Moreover, appreciating the terminal's proximity to renowned attractions such as Times Square and Central Park adds an extra layer of convenience and excitement for visitors. These cruises take passengers on a journey through breathtaking landscapes, charming cities, and picturesque coastal towns. From the stunning beauty of the Canadian Rockies to the vibrant culture of Quebec City, there’s something for everyone on a Canadian cruise. Paris to the Swiss Alps 2024 Itinerary Paris to Zürich Viking®

cruise to switzerland

When cruise packages that include Zurich are booked through a cruise line, passengers generally are transported between the ship and hotel by motor coach. The trip may include scenic stops and/or tours along the way to facilitate arrival at the appropriate check-in time. Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

NEW! Treasures of the Rhine

Its beautiful four-roomed crypt is the resting place of many Holy Roman emperors and German kings. There’s free time to explore here before stepping back on board for another splendid dinner. Switzerland enjoys the distinction of being the country in which the Rhine, one of the world’s most famous rivers, begins its journey. From high up in the Swiss Alps, it flows down into the country and forms its border with neighbouring Germany, which you can enjoy on a Germany river cruise, before continuing onward. River cruises along the Rhine that begin and end in Basel, Switzerland, are sometimes packaged with a stay in Zurich, roughly 50 miles away.

Why Take A Tauck River Cruise

We arrive at the ancient town of Breisach, whose historic heart is surrounded by stone ramparts and dominated by the impressive Saint Stephan’s Cathedral. Wherever you wander you’re never far from a riverbank, and it’s worth crossing the 14th-century stone Balduin Bridge across the Moselle for fine views back across the spires of the Altstadt. Tonight, enjoy a meticulously prepared dinner on board, and afterward perhaps a quiet stroll along the riverside promenade to the Deutsches Eck – ‘German Corner’ – where the great rivers Rhine and Moselle meet. As you wake to a sumptuous breakfast, the delights of this river cruise begin to emerge as we drift past the first rolling hills of the Rhine Valley. The forested Siebengebirge – Seven Mountains – a cluster of ancient volcanic hills that inspired many of the Brothers Grimm’s legends, including ‘Snow White’, act as the overture for even more dramatic scenery upstream. Basel is a city in northwestern Switzerland on the Swiss, French and German borders.

Paris to the Swiss Alps

Certainly, you’ll be rewarded with some truly awesome views when you reach the top. If you do find yourself with time for a look around, there are some key architectural attractions well worth seeing, including the strikingly red City Hall and the beautiful Munster, with its colourful tiled roof. Basel is regarded by many as Switzerland's cultural hub and also home to some excellent museums including its Fine Art Museum and distinctly original Paper Mill Museum. Basel makes the perfect destination for a river cruise in Switzerland so book ahead for your 2025 river cruise and enjoy early booking benefits.

EMBARK IN BASEL

As the sun sets and the riverside lights begin to twinkle, enjoy the views through the restaurant’s panoramic windows as we commence our cruise towards Strasbourg, arriving later tonight. As the sun sets and the riverside lights begin to twinkle there are wonderful views over the imposing Vosges massif. You enjoy this evening’s dinner en route to Switzerland and our next mooring at Basel. Later you drive through some of Central Europe’s most stunning scenery – the Black Forest Mountains. Your final day cruising is spent gliding through the dramatic scenery of the rift valley separating the Vosges and Black Forest mountains.

About Booking This Tour

cruise to switzerland

You are not required to obtain a visa to enter any country visited for the short duration of this tour. Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items.

It can be printed or emailed to your fellow travelling companions to assist you in your trip planning. Complimentary Wi-Fi is available throughout the ship for the duration of your cruise. As evening falls, thoughts turn to what might be on the menu tonight, so head to the relaxed ambiance of the ship’s restaurant as the chef presents another delicious meal. We have made steady progress overnight and this morning we are berthed in the ancient town of Breisach. After a leisurely breakfast stroll ashore, explore this picturesque town’s historic heart, which is surrounded by immense stone ramparts and dominated by the impressive Saint Stephan’s Cathedral.

The beautiful four-roomed crypt, with its striking marble floors and pastel-colored pillars, is the resting place of many Holy Roman emperors and German kings. Another landmark is the magnificent neo-Gothic Gedächtniskirche, built to commemorate the 1529 ‘Protestation at Speyer’, a significant event when a group of Martin Luther’s followers protested his imperial ban. During lunch, our elegant vessel glides away from our mooring as we commence an afternoon’s scenic cruising. Head up to the sun deck and take in the views from the comfort of a sun lounger or retire to the shady comfort of the lounge to chat over a coffee with newly made friends. The scenery becomes ever more dramatic, and as you enter the Bernese Oberland in central Switzerland, it becomes quite literally, breathtaking!

This is the grand alpine heart of Europe with some of the finest mountain scenery on earth, described by the composer Mendelssohn as ‘the most wonderful of all in this unbelievably beautiful country’. On viewing the legendary snow-capped peaks of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau you’ll be quite simply awestruck. We then ascend by mountain railway for more extraordinary vistas, with the crystal-clear lakes reflecting the meadows and forests below. Later we’ll descend again by mountain railway before returning to the ship. Please note, temperatures will be significantly lower at altitude, even during the summer months, so it’s advisable to pack suitable clothing.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

Next, we continue our navigation through the dramatic Rhine Gorge where the sheer valley walls tower over 400m above our heads and onto Rudesheim, where we enjoy another evening complemented with an excellent dinner on board. Switzerland plays host to some amazing destinations, with amazing port cities to explore and staggering views to see. Taking a Switzerland river cruise is an experience sure to last a lifetime.

Celebrity Cruises: Ask a Question Cruise Critic Message Board Forums

The common ladies rooms were generally well kept. Some had attendants in them, some didn't. I love the hand towels and those were fresh.

More about Celebrity Reflection

We also had a lot of issues with the shower in my cabin, it seemed to be leaking and every time the shower ran the carpet would get wet next to the bed. They offered to bring an industrial blower in but there was already no room in the cabin and I never could have slept with that. I sailed on INFINITY almost 20 years ago to Hawaii and loved it. Happy to return in September with some friends.

From Its Deck Plan to the Magic Carpet, Celebrity Edge Stays True to Its Name

Literally we watched them sit, take menus and then get up to move tables... So we waited almost 25 minutes for our table for 2. Then the waiter came right over and said "do you know what you want" we were like ummm no we haven't opened the menus, how about a cocktail first?

The Infinite Veranda and Sky Suite Top the List of Celebrity Edge Cabins

But those who appreciate stylish, contemporary design will fall in love. In a few short years, Celebrity Edge has become a favorite for many adult cruisers seeking a sophisticated experience. While at max capacity the ship can hold up to 3,609 passengers, Reflection rarely feels crowded, as passengers tend to find their own spaces to hang out in. It's also well designed, and favorite spots like the excellent thermal spa are capacity controlled. Thanks for posting your thoughts. I'm sailing Infinity next month and am looking forward to a nice, relaxing cruise.

Celebrity Cruise Reviews

While on the topic of cleaning and maintenance... We found several "lights out" around the ship.... One light in the stairwell and one in one of the ladies rooms.

Today's Birthdays - Enjoy your day!

We sailed the second sailing and based on that I would have told anyone to run far far away from Infinity. Dinner near three hours most nights, just a few bar servers on the pool deck and only two bartenders at the pool bar so it was a long wait. No 'large' martini glasses so the martinis were half of their normal size.

From there, it's a breeze to get onto the tenders, or you can stay to get a drink and watch others get on and off -- talk about people-watching. It's somewhere people actually want to go, rather than escape. Reflection stands out with its exceptional variety of cabins, including its beautiful suites. They also receive complimentary access to Blu, which serves up healthier "spa cuisine."

Where does Celebrity Edge sail to?

Dinner at Le Petit Chef is a must. The show is cute but really the meal is wonderful. It's never crowded so the chef is cooking for a small group. We went the first night (with a discount) and there were 12 of us in the whole restaurant. Lack of staff made the whole experience long and drawn out (over 3 hours for the 2 of us). We had a reservation but had to wait because the group in front of us couldn't find a table they liked.

Dinner in the main dining room was very nice. The steak Diane was delish as well as the lobster an beef wellington. Soups were good, salads fresh and always happy to give you extra vegetable instead of potatoes. After embarkation concierge lunch sandwiched in-between two tables of 2 (so we were actually a table of 6 lol) we asked for a table for 2 not close to anyone. Our wish was granted each night with a lovely, quiet table by the stairs.

We both were on the Edge last year and while it's beautiful, we prefer the smaller ships. I am happy to answer any questions you may have. Find your Celebrity Millennium Roll Call by choosing your sailing month from the drop down menu below. And the Celebrity Edge Magic Carpet isn't just a tender platform. It can be positioned on Decks 5 and 14, where it serves as an eatery or bar. Cool sophistication is the unmistakable vibe onboard Celebrity Reflection, the biggest of the five ships in the line's mega-popular Solstice Class.

Our poor waiter was the only one in our section with 6 tables seated all within 30 minutes of each other. The food was nothing spectacular. Defiantly not Ruth's Chris or Jeff Ruby but not "Fancy like Applebee's" either LOL.

The crew was constantly cleaning. Cleaning the stairwells, the pool deck, the Oceanview Cafe, the casino. Public areas were very well maintained. I could tell some carpets were new, some cabins updated ( I did look into a suite on our floor and it had new carpet, bedding and beautiful dark cherry finishes). It seems they continue to work on updates as they are sailing. I am sorry we don't have any of the planners.

We enjoy open seating and we do actually enjoy sitting with tablemates, but I think the Open Seating doesn't allow you to sit with the same people each night. So we feel like you are interviewing for a new job each evening. LOL  Martini Bar was a hot spot and the drinks were wonderful.

Speaking only for us, we wouldn't be concerned. Cruise line, food, entertainment, condition, age, size of the ship is subjective. We never book or not book a cruise based on someone else's positive or negative opinions or experiences. Never been on a bad ship (no matter the cruise line) yet.

When and How to See the Northern Lights in Alaska

best time to cruise alaska to see northern lights 2023

Hike some of the trails to catch a glimpse of the northern lights in Alaska. During the winter, clear dark skies and aurora activity make Juneau an ideal spot to witness the stunning northern lights display. It consistently tops the list of places in Alaska and the world to catch the dazzling display and it’s not because the dancing green lights just happen to favor this gold rush boomtown.

Board a glass-domed rail car, called the Wilderness Express, to Fairbanks, and soak up picturesque views every step of the way. On Celebrity, cruises to Alaska and Iceland just might yield sightings of Aurora Borealis. That said, even if you don’t see the Northern Lights during your cruise, there’s plenty to fall in love with in these exciting destinations, from incredible dog-sledding competitions to hiking along stunning fjords.

However, it’s important to note that the Northern Lights are a natural occurrence and can be unpredictable. While there are peak times and locations for viewing, there are no guarantees. Patience, persistence, and a bit of luck are key when it comes to chasing the Northern Lights. You may be wondering about the Northern Lights, also referred to as the aurora borealis. These are the captivating lights that gracefully color Alaska's skies with shades of seafoam green, fluorescent yellow, and vibrant fuchsia.

Oceanwide Expeditions: East Greenland Scoresby Sund - Aurora Borealis

Read on for our comprehensive guide on how to choose the best northern lights cruise for you. As you explore the ports of call on your Alaskan cruise, keep in mind that some destinations, such as Nome and Barrow, offer a higher probability of seeing the Northern Lights due to their proximity to the Arctic Circle. Research the best times to visit each port and consult with experts to ensure you make the most of your journey.

And it truly is an adventure - because its appearance from one sighting to the next is never the same. I like to think that chasing the Borealis similar to the adrenaline rush of storm-chasers who follow tornadoes - except, you're chasing a natural beauty, rather than a destructive force. Here’s all you need to know to pick the best time to see northern lights in Alaska. A commitment to personalized service is an integral part of UnCruise’s all-inclusive experience.

The Northern Lights occur when charged particles from the sun collide with gases in the Earth’s atmosphere, producing colorful displays of light. The colors are determined by the type of gas and the altitude at which the collision occurs. The Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis, are caused by electrically charged particles from the sun colliding with atoms and molecules in the Earth’s atmosphere. This collision releases energy in the form of vibrant, dancing lights that can be seen in the polar regions.

What is the Best Time to See Northern Lights in Alaska?

The prime months for Northern Lights viewing in Alaska are from September to April, with the peak season occurring in the winter months. If you're eager to capture the beauty of the Northern Lights, it's advisable to bring along a high-quality camera. Many guests find it beneficial to also have a tripod, a remote control, and extra batteries for a smooth photography experience. Utilizing a sturdy tripod will help stabilize your camera for long exposure shots, which are ideal for capturing the movement and colors of the Northern Lights. Experimenting with different shutter speeds, ISO settings, and aperture values will enable you to find the optimal settings for your specific location and lighting conditions. Lastly, be patient and prepared to spend time outdoors during the night, as the Aurora Borealis is a natural phenomenon that can be unpredictable.

Within minutes it seemed everyone on board had gathered at the railings on deck to watch. The captain of the ship nimbly repositioned us, giving both the port and starboard sides prime viewing, at a safe and respectful distance from the animals. With binoculars, cameras, and phones at the ready, the passengers and crew aboard UnCruise Adventures' 86-guest S.S. Legacy settled in for what turned out to be an hour-long private show by a juvenile humpback who had migrated from Hawaii to spend the summer in the nutrient-rich Alaskan waters. The Alaska cruise season is a little over six months long, but choosing the best time to cruise Alaska is surprisingly not that simple. The best time to see Northern Lights in Alaska is when daylight slips into a seasonal slumber and the darkened skies blanket the city below.

best time to cruise alaska to see northern lights 2023

A mythic journey along the scenic St. Lawrence River and out to the Atlantic, this Concierge Cruise is a cultural immersion into Québec, Newfoundland and the Maritimes. Here are some quick tips to help you increase the odds of seeing whales during your cruise. September also increases your wildlife sighting opportunities, as animals across the state begin migrating, foraging for hibernation and engaging in courtship rituals.

Rates for the eight-day itinerary start from $4,600 per person for the 2023 sailings. Specializing in polar voyages, Quark Expeditions knows a thing or two about the northern lights, which is why the company offers aurora sailings each fall. These 14-day itineraries cruise from Iceland to Greenland and back from September into early October. And if they don't show, well, you still get to explore Iceland's Westfjords and Greenland's eastern shores — and that's a worthwhile journey in itself. The most affordable option on this list, British cruise line P&O operates 12-day sailings to Norway year-round, but during the auroral season, there's a strong chance you'll see the northern lights while onboard.

The northern lights, or aurora borealis, is a top-listed experience on many travelers’ bucket lists. But like most things in nature, they might not show, even if you visit Alaska at the best time. Hurtigruten is something of an outlier in this group because it doesn't offer specific northern lights itineraries. But the routes of this coastal ferry company in Norway just happen to traverse the perfect latitudes to see the aurora. For the best odds of seeing the northern lights, we suggest the 12-day round-trip itinerary from Bergen up the coast of Norway and back.

And Norway and generally sail 10 to 15-night itineraries during the winter season. Some venture to the Svalbard Archipelago, where the Gulf Stream flows prevent the seas from freezing in winter. You’ve got your camera, a snack, and a heart full of patience, just in case you don’t see anything that night.

Seeing the Northern Lights is one of those magical experiences on nearly every traveler’s bucket list due to the surreal way light moves in waves of green color across the nighttime sky. With its scenic landscapes, abounding wildlife, and majestic glaciers, Alaska is a beautiful destination any time of year. But if you’re thinking of exploring this vibrant region on an Alaskan cruise, the best time to do so is between May and September.

During the winter season, Alaska experiences long nights and relatively clear skies, creating optimal conditions for Northern Lights sightings. The absence of daylight allows for darker skies, making it easier to spot the ethereal glow of the Aurora Borealis. The months of December to March are especially popular for viewing the Northern Lights, as the nights are longer, increasing your chances of witnessing this celestial spectacle. This month brings the warmest weather of the year, the longest hours of daylight and the largest number of tourists.

Ice crampons may come in handy, especially in ports where walkways may be icy or slick. On some active excursions, outfitters provide weather appropriate gear, but you can’t always count on that. And don’t forget your bathing suit for outdoor tub soaks and pool swims onboard.

If you’re sailing on a 2021 cruise to Alaska, you might even have the chance to admire this natural phenomenon from the comfort of your private Veranda Stateroom or from one of the open-air decks on board. In 2021, our cruises to Alaska will be sailing later than usual, kicking off the season in late July and ending in early October. These exciting seven-night itineraries stop in stunning Alaskan ports, such as Ketchikan and Juneau, and spend a day sailing close to the majestic Dawes Glacier, a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many travelers. From mid-November through March, you can check into a lodge or look for the lights each night as you try a different activity, like ice fishing or dogsledding. And if you’re on an aurora quest from mid-August to mid-September, (Fall) there’s still time to enjoy summer activities, like visiting Denali National Park or taking a glacier cruise.

Royal Caribbean Ship Classes Comparison With Chart

royal caribbean cruise ships by class

Most of the ships carry around 3,100 passengers at double occupancy — about 800 fewer than the typical Freedom-class ship. Overall, the Freedom-class ships offer a classic big-ship experience with a range of amenities and activities. While they are not as large or as packed with attractions as some of Royal Caribbean’s newer ships, they still offer plenty to keep passengers entertained.

Things to Do on Ovation of the Seas

Vision, Rhapsody, and Grandeur of the Seas have one main pool and four jacuzzis on the main pool deck area. The fitness center is complimentary, but offers fitness classes and nutrition consultations at an extra cost. The Vision Class did not follow the same naming pattern found in the rest of Royal Caribbean’s fleet. With other classes of ships, the first ship in the fleet shared the same name as the class. However, Vision of the Seas was actually the last ship in the Vision Class. Instead, this area of the ship is Skylight Chapel, a wedding chapel that can accommodate up to forty people.

Quantum & Quantum Ultra Class

The three ships of the Freedom class launched between 2006 and 2008, built on the success of the Voyager class ships with many enhancements. While the overall design between the two ship classes is quite similar, the increased size of Freedom class allowed designers at Royal Caribbean to push innovation and provide more onboard experiences. Freedom class introduced the lines first cantilevered whirlpools, FlowRider Surf Simulator and dedicated kids splash park, plus expanded dining and entertainment venues in the larger Royal Promenade and around the ship. Both ships have a Royal Promenade, but on Icon-class vessels this will have a central feature called The Pearl, as well as lots of natural light.

Voyager-Class Ships

The appeal of these ships is more about the ports they visit than the onboard experience. The Oasis Class is a series of cruise ships by Royal Caribbean that includes Oasis of the Seas, Allure of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas, Symphony of the Seas, Wonder of the Seas, and the upcoming Utopia of the Seas. These ships are the biggest cruise vessels afloat, and they offer a wide range of amenities that cater to big-ship lovers. Royal Caribbean is a cruise line that offers a wide range of ship styles and designs.

Forget the age of these ships, there's lots to do for every age, from the sports court, to the ice rink, to the rock wall. These ships feature plenty of live music, a mini-golf course, surf simulators, and more.

Icon Class

As you might expect, the biggest Royal Caribbean ships have the most amenities. With each step down in size, you'll find fewer restaurants, bars, entertainment venues and attractions. Even the smallest Royal Caribbean ships still have quite a bit to offer, though. Vision Class ships may not have as many dining options as new ships, but they still offer three specialty dining venues in addition to the complimentary restaurants (with the exception of Enchantment of the Seas). Therefore, guests will have a few dining options to choose from each night or when celebrating a special occasion.

At 90,090 tons, the Radiance-class ships have more than a half-dozen places to eat, including a main restaurant, casual buffet, steakhouse, Italian restaurant, and Asian venue. Each ship has three pools, whirlpools, a rock climbing wall, a miniature golf course, a sports court, and an adults-only solarium. The ships also have a theater, spa, casino, and multiple bars and lounges. Royal's Voyager-class ships have plenty to keep cruisers busy, including multiple pools and whirlpools, an ice skating rink, rock climbing wall and mini-golf. All also feature the Royal Promenade where cruisers can enjoy people-watching, have a drink in a pub, stop at the Café Promenade for a quick snack or go shopping. Amenities and features on Royal Caribbean's Icon-class ships expand some of the most famous offerings on their wildly popular Oasis class of ships.

Differences between the Freedom Class ships

Quantum-class ships overflow with things to do, eat and see and feature some high-tech activities on board. Like the Freedom Class vessels, the Voyager Class ships have many of Royal Caribbean's signature attractions, including rock climbing walls and ice skating rinks. The Freedom Class ships, notably, were the first Royal Caribbean ships to feature a FlowRider surfing simulator on their top decks — now a signature attraction for the line. The vessels also have multiple pool areas, a water park, a miniature golf course and a rock climbing wall on their top decks (which are among the most activity-packed at sea).

A great example of this is in the Main Dining Room, which were inspired by the design and layout of opera houses. The Adventure Ocean programming on Navigator was modernized during the amplification as well, and features a kid's rock climbing wall as wall as an outdoor deck for teens. A Royal Caribbean cruise on a Voyager Class ship will certainly not be boring. These ships pack plenty of activities every day of the cruise for guests of all ages. Explorer of the Seas and Adventure of the Seas were set to be amplified in 2020 and 2021, but amplification has been postponed due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Because of this, these two ships have some notable differences in onboard activities and dining offerings.

It all starts with the boldest cruise ships at sea — and ours have won awards for everything from world class dining and spectacular entertainment, to record-setting onboard thrills and groundbreaking innovation. Once the largest cruise ships in the world, these Royal Caribbean ships can accommodate slightly less than 4,000 passengers at double occupancy. All those passengers can look forward to plenty of specialty restaurant choices, and even Broadway shows on two of the ships, such as "Saturday Night Fever" and "Grease."

Royal Caribbean makes it easy for choosing a cruise ship to sail on – they have ships of varying different sizes and capacities – allowing them to sail from multiple ports around the world year-round. Of the major cruise lines, few offer a more diverse lineup of ship classes than Royal Caribbean. In fact, for the most-part, Royal Caribbean ship classes are quite distinguishable from each other. In this post, we’re highlighting class specific features and giving you the insight to choose the best ship for your next Royal Caribbean cruise. With far fewer passengers than a bigger cruise ship, I felt more like a guest and less like just a number.

You'll also find budget-friendly shorter sailings on most of these ships. Freedom Class ships represent an excellent value for families that want to cruise on a large ship, have lots of activities, but not break their budget. From a pure value standpoint, the Freedom Class ships are a great choice for a fabulous cruise experience. Dating to the 1990s, the Vision Class ships are the smallest at Royal Caribbean, and they offer fewer onboard attractions and amenities than is typical for the line's vessels. Most of the ships in the class hold 4,180 passengers at double occupancy — 4,905 if every berth is filled. One exception is Spectrum of the Seas, which was specifically built for the China market with some design differences.

Royal Caribbean operates a fleet of 26 ships, ranging in size from smaller vessels with a maximum occupancy of around 2,500 passengers to the largest cruise ships in the world. The company has built its brand around offering vacationers a ton of diversions on its ships, whether for dining or entertainment. Voyager Class was not only a game-changer for Royal Caribbean, but also the cruise industry.
